About the center

The Stanley P. Wilson Beef Teaching Center was built in 2003 for beef cattle teaching, research, and extension programs. It serves as a teaching laboratory for several Department of Animal Sciences major courses, including introductory animal science, beef production, reproductive physiology, modern livestock systems, livestock evaluation, and practicum.

The beef center is a fully working farm providing students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience, from proper handling techniques and herd health management to operating equipment and farm maintenance. The center also supports Alabama Cooperative Extension System programs targeting youth and adults interested in the beef cattle industry and is the site for many meetings for clubs in the College of Agriculture throughout the year. It is AAALAC International-accredited, demonstrating a commitment to responsible animal care and use.

The Facility

The Beef Teaching Center is conveniently located on the main Auburn University campus near the intersection of Shug Jordan Parkway and Wire Road. The facility has a stanchion room, metabolism room, prep lab for beef cattle research projects, two working chutes (manual & hydraulic), a modern classroom, kitchen, meeting room, and a conference room for smaller group meetings.

The cattle herd is maintained on approximately 200 grazeable acres, with pastures located at properties on Shug Jordan Parkway, Longleaf Drive, and in north Auburn off U.S. Highway 280. Its pastures, which consist primarily of bermudagrass, bahiagrass, and tall fescue, vary in size from 5 acres to 30 acres. They are rotationally stocked and are overseeded with annually with cool-season annual forages. The degree of control made possible with pastures permanently dedicated to grazing cattle allows for thorough data collection and management.
