Our fisheries, aquaculture and marine programs span freshwater to coastal systems, combining research and Extension to support industries, communities and natural resources. Our research and Extension centers and units reflect how our science is advancing aquatic health, sustainability and industry development across Alabama and the Southeast.

Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Unit

The Alabama Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is a partnership research program based at Auburn. Established in 1936, the unit is cooperatively supported by Auburn University, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Wildlife Management Institute.

The Alabama Fish Farming Center in Greensboro supports the development and growth of the Alabama aquaculture industry by serving as a connector between the industry and Auburn University’s research and Extension communities as well as state and federal agencies.

The Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center in Mobile focuses on marine science, water quality and habitat restoration. Its research and Extension teams offer practical guidance for communities along the coastal region.

Auburn University Shellfish Lab

The Auburn University Shellfish Lab, located on the campus of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, conducts a variety of applied and basic research on marine invertebrates. The facility includes a production hatchery and nursery and serves as a base of operations for the Extension team working with commercial seafood stakeholders.

Claude Peteet Mariculture Center

The Claude Peteet Mariculture Center has operated in Gulf Shores since 1970, currently offering facilities for broodfish spawning, algae production, live food production, egg incubation, larval rearing and juvenile holding. The center currently cultures and releases saltwater fish such as spotted seatrout, Florida pompano and Southern flounder.

Southeast Cooperative Fish Parasite & Disease Laboratory

The Southeastern Cooperative Fish Parasite and Disease Laboratory is a multistate fish disease diagnostics and research lab focused on aquatic pathogens, parasites and fish health. The lab provides disease diagnostics, surveillance and training for agencies and producers while partnering widely to improve fish disease management throughout the Southeast.
