CONSUMERISM
Consumerism: Emphasizes that the main part in the service will be the client. Clients are consumers who are actively involved in the rehabilitation process. This means they are allowed to select from the different types of resources available to them and will actively choose what kind of services they would like to receive. Within most state and federal Vocational Rehabilitation agencies, individuals with disabilities are usually referred to as "consumers" rather than "clients."
EMPOWERMENT
Empowerment: The transfer of power and control over decisions, choices, and values from external entities (like RC professionals) to the consumers of disability services. This is based on the concept that consumers/clients are experts in their own lives, so they should have the power and control over what kinds of services they will receive and be allowed to make the final choice when it comes to their life decisions.
SELF-DETERMINATION
Self-Determination: The transfer of power and control over decisions, choices, and values from external entities (like RC professionals) to the consumers of disability services. This is based on the concept that consumers/clients are experts in their own lives, so they should have the power and control over what kinds of services they will receive and be allowed to make the final choice when it comes to their life decisions.
