Message to the Faculty Regarding CourseEval

September 12, 2011

Dear Faculty,

The University Senate, upon the recommendation of the Teaching Effectiveness Committee, approved an online student course evaluation process for Auburn University.  The implementation of this decision is in progress:  at the end of this fall semester, our students will be asked to complete evaluations of courses using the online tool, CoursEval.

The CoursEval system is a web-based software application that allows students to anonymously evaluate courses and instructors.  Some of the benefits for CoursEval identified by the Senate Teaching Effectiveness Committee are:

  1. Ease of use for the students.

  2. Customizable surveys that may be tailored to meet the needs of individual colleges, academic departments, and courses.

  3. Results are quickly available.

During the months of September and October, the CoursEval Implementation Committee, appointed by the Interim Provost and approved by the Senate leadership, including student, faculty, and administrative members, will establish the system and aid the colleges and schools in its use.

The schedule for offering Fall 2011 course evaluations is November 28 – December 2nd and reports will be available for viewing after the Fall grading period has closed. Dissemination of survey results will follow faculty handbook policy.

The experiences gained during this fall will guide the individual academic units in customizing CoursEval for the future.

Please direct questions about your unit’s use of CoursEval to your college/school’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tim Boosinger, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
