Why AFROTC?

Air Force ROTC is the primary source of commissioned officers for the United States Air Force and Space Force. At Auburn, Detachment 005 prepares you to lead through a combination of academics, leadership laboratories, physical training, and field training exercises — all while earning your college degree.

As a cadet, you'll develop the skills and confidence to lead in any environment. You'll graduate with a commission as a Second Lieutenant and a clear path into one of over 130 career fields across the Air Force and Space Force

How To Join

Joining AFROTC at Auburn is open to all full-time students. You do not need a scholarship to participate, and there is no military commitment during your first two years in the program. Here's what you need to get started:

Basic Requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be enrolled full-time at Auburn University
  • Meet Air Force physical fitness standards
  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Be able to complete the program before age 39
  • Pass a Department of Defense medical examination

If you are an incoming Freshman you should register for AIRF 1010 for your fall semester. Not a incoming freshman? No worries! You can register for AFROTC as late as your first Sophomore semester. Contact detachment staff if you are registering after your fall Freshmen semester.

From Freshman to Second Lieutenant

AFROTC is a four-year program split into two phases. The first two years (General Military Course) have no military commitment and let you explore what the Air Force has to offer. The final two years (Professional Officer Course) prepare you for active duty service after graduation.
Your First Year
Enroll in AIRF 1010 (1 credit hour). Attend weekly Leadership Laboratory sessions and physical training. Learn the foundations of the Air Force, customs and courtesies, and begin building your leadership skills. There is no military obligation during this year.
Sophomore Year
Continue with AIRF 2010 and deepen your understanding of leadership, team building, and communication. Compete for an Enrollment Allocation to advance into the Professional Officer Course. Prepare for Field Training, a rigorous summer program at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.
Juniors & Seniors
After completing Field Training, you enter the POC as a contracted cadet. Take on leadership roles within the detachment, mentor younger cadets, and refine your skills in national security, ethics, and military operations. Compete for your preferred Air Force Specialty Code (career field) and prepare for active duty.
