€of€unsettled€questions€regarding€theÏde€facto€tenure€of€Lida€¢Mayfield£.€€The€central€administration,Ïalthough€now€recognizing€de€facto€tenure,€considers€the€case€closedÏand€refuses€to€discuss€possible€ways€of€resolving€the€question€thatÏwould€secure€rem
oval€from€the€censure€list.€€Such€intractability€byÏthe€administration€in€the€¢Mayfield£€controversy€makes€it€lessÏsurprising€that€it€would€not€be€amenable€to€granting€tenure€to€aÏcontroversial€professor€with€a€high€national€profile.Ì€€€Adding€to€the€cont
roversy€is€that€while€Professor€¢Curran£€was€atÏCatholic€University,€he€was€declared€ineligible€to€teach€CatholicÏtheology€in€1987.€€He€did€not€have€his€tenure€removed,€however,€andÏwent€on€a€leave€of€absence€to€teach€at€other€universities.€€ThisÏaction€o
n€the€part€of€the€administration€at€Catholic€University€ledÏto€¢censureship£€by€the€AAUP,€which€determined€that€the€university'sÏadministration€had€violated€Professor€¢Curran£'s€academic€freedom€byÏnot€permitting€him€to€teach€anywhere€in€the€university€[ñ

in€specific€instances€to€warrant€censureÏby€the€AAUP.€€It€also€goes€beyond€¢Curran£'s€stands€on€such€questionsÏas€birth€control,€abortion,€and€homosexuality€and€whether€or€notÏthey€are€shared€by€the€majority€of€the€Catholic€faithful.€€RatherÏthe€issue€is€
a€fundamental€one€of€academic€freedom.€€Should€anyÏprofessor,€especially€one€whose€academic€credentials€are€asÏimpeccable€as€¢Curran£'s,€be€denied€tenure€solely€on€the€basis€thatÏhis€research,€writing,€and€public€statements€are€controversial?€ÏWhat€is€the
€purpose€of€tenure€if€it€is€not€to€ensure€freedom€ofÐ
nied€in€theÏdefiance€of€the€recommendations€of€a€distinguished€search€committeeÏand€strong€support€for€tenure€from€colleagues€and€the€universityÏpromotion€and€tenure€committee.€€Is€it€the€proper€role€of€aÏuniversity€president€to€overturn€a€decision€in€fav
or€of€tenure€thatÏhad€been€reached€through€such€long„established€and€acceptableÏprocedures?€€The€answer€to€all€of€these€questions,€in€the€opinionÏof€the€AAUP,€is€no.Ì€€€The€central€administration€has€stated€that€no€visitingÏprofessors,€no€matter€how€emine
nt,€have€received€tenure€at€AU€andÏthat€no€one€coming€to€Auburn€under€the€circumstances€of€ProfessorÏ¢Curran£€has€received€instant€tenure.€€President€Martin€and€othersÏare€reported€to€have€said€that€Professor€¢Curran£€knew€what€he€wasÏgetting€into€when€he
€agreed€to€come€to€AU€as€a€visiting€scholar€andÏthat€neither€he€nor€the€faculty€should€be€surprised€that€he€did€notÏreceive€tenure.€€There€have€also€been€assertions€that€becauseÏProfessor€¢Curran£€did€not€have€tenure€at€a€university€before€comingÏto€AU,€t
here€was€no€basis€for€giving€him€tenure€here.ÌÖ

t€the€faculty€are€the€losers,€but€the€entire€university.Ì€€€€€There€is€also€a€widespread€perception€at€AU€that€the€facultyÏare€employees€and€that€the€administration€has€an€authorityÏequivalent€to€that€of€an€employer.€€That€is€not€how€a€university€isÏor€sh
ould€be€governed.€€Faculty€members€must€be€solely€responsibleÏfor€decisions€regarding€appointments,€reappointments,€promotions,Ïgranting€of€tenure,€and€dismissal.€€The€administration€and€board€ofÏtrustees€can€only€intervene€when€there€are€compelling€reaso

€Chair€of€the€General€Faculty,Ïat€the€October€University€Senate€meeting€that€the€Senate€leadershipÏwould€appoint€a€similar€ad€hoc€committee€this€year.€€We€remainÏconcerned,€however,€about€the€lack€of€any€permanent€mechanism€forÏfaculty€input€into€the€budg
