AAUP RESOLUTION CALLING FOR RESIGNATION OF THE
AUBURN UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Auburn University Chapter of AAUP
April 19, 2001
WHEREAS the Board of Trustees has compromised the reputation and integrity of Auburn University by its actions relating to academic policies and university governance; and
WHEREAS the Auburn University Board of Trustees has consistently disregarded guidelines for shared governance recommended by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), Southeastern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and Association of Governing Boards (AGB); and
WHEREAS the Board of Trustees has failed to recognize, or respect, the critical role of faculty in university governance, and has failed to appreciate or embrace the concept of shared governance; and
WHEREAS the Board of Trustees, by its actions, has betrayed the confidence and trust of the faculty, students, staff, administrators, and alumni in meeting its responsibilities to Auburn University; and
WHEREAS continuation of the present board and the distrust it engenders fosters a climate that seriously impedes a search for a new president and preparation for the upcoming SACS review; and
WHEREAS, when a governing body has lost the confidence and trust of the constituents it purports to represent, the only honorable thing to do is voluntarily resign;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Auburn University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors calls upon all members of the AU Board of Trustees to resign, in the best interest of this institution.
