Flexible Spending Account

The Flexible Spending Account Plan allows employees on the PPO plan to elect a portion of their income to be used to pay for expenses such as outside medical premiums, unreimbursed medical expenses, and dependent child care with pre-tax money.

The amounts contributed to the plan are not subject to federal, state, or FICA/Medicare taxes. Therefore, employees recognize tax savings for allowable expenses and an increase in spendable income.

Health Savings Account

A Health Savings Account is offered with the HDHP plan and helps pay for eligible medical expenses that are not covered by the insurance plan. The account is owned by the employee, and not Auburn University. Both the employee and the university are eligible to contribute to the HSA account.

HSAs offer triple tax benefits: contributions are pre-tax; earnings grow tax-free; and withdrawals for eligible medical expenses are tax-free.

These benefits provide a way to save for healthcare costs while reducing the employee's taxable income.
