APPLY TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS


The Department of Physics welcomes applications from prospective students with an interest in our graduate and research programs. Prospective students should have a bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree in physics or a related field and should apply online at the Auburn University Graduate School webpage.

 

PRE- APPLICATION

New Pre-Application for Fall 2025 (optional)

Prospective students are invited to submit a free, optional Pre-Application by December 15, 2024. The Pre-Application requires fewer documents than the full application and provides an initial review. Pre-applicants will receive feedback within a few weeks, including guidance on whether to proceed with a full application. Additionally, using the Pre-Application, we can assess eligibility for waivers and fellowships.

Under the category Admissions Information, applicants should select Physics/PHD as their Planned Course of Study.

 

The Physics Department does not require domestic students to submit GRE scores (either general or subject). Domestic students may submit GRE scores if they wish to do so.

The Physics Department does require international students to submit GRE General test scores as part of their application, as well as TOEFL (or equivalent) scores.

The following information is required for a complete application:

  1. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts (official)
  2. Statement of purpose and research interests, which may include names of potential research advisors
  3. The names and contact information of three Recommendation Providers
  4. General GRE and TOEFL scores (for international students only)

Applications submitted by January 15 will receive full consideration for the upcoming academic year that begins August 15.

Once the application review process is complete, qualified domestic students will be invited to visit the Auburn campus at the Department’s expense to learn more about the Auburn Physics graduate program.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How quickly can I expect an email response from the Admissions Committee?
    • We receive numerous emails regarding applications and admissions in the period leading up to the review of applications but you should receive a response within one week.

 

  • Where do I send supplemental materials?
    • If necessary, we will request supplemental materials on a case-by-case basis once the selection period begins.

 

  • Will I be accepted based upon my credentials?
    • Prospective students interested in a preliminary indication of the competitiveness of their application are strongly encouraged to submit a Pre-Application by December 15. Formal acceptance into the Auburn Physics Graduate Program can only result from submitting a full application where selection is based upon multiple factors including academic preparation, recommendation letters, previous research experience, and demonstrated interest in research at Auburn.

 

  • What standardized tests and minimum scores are required for admission to the Auburn Physics Graduate Program?
    • The Auburn University Graduate School requires that ALL international applicants “MUST SCORE at least 550 on the paper TOEFL (pBT), 213 on the computer TOEFL (cBT), and 79 on the internet TOEFL (iBT) or 6.5 Overall Band Score on the IELTS to be considered for admission.”  This includes international applicants applying from within the U.S.

 

  • Can you waive my application fee?
    • Any fee waivers will be determined through the review of Pre-Applications.
