MICHELLE BECK

Michelle Beck

Dr. Michelle Beck is a Senior Associate at Industrial Economics Incorporated (IEc) in Cambridge, MA and works in the natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) practice as a consultant. In this position, she provides technical support for federal, state, and tribal clients who are seeking to restore natural resources injured by the release of hazardous substances (including organic, radionuclide, and metal contaminants). This work results in restoration projects that benefit the injured resources (e.g., birds or groundwater) and human uses of these resources (e.g., recreational fishing), such as habitat restoration or enhancements to outdoor recreation.

Michelle holds a Master of Science in Biology from Auburn University and a Doctorate in Zoology from Washington State University. She has a background in ecotoxicology and wildlife ecology and held postdoctoral research positions at Virginia Tech where she first gained experience in NRDA and examined the effects of contaminants on songbirds and reptiles in the field and laboratory. Prior to joining IEc in 2021, she was an assistant professor at a small private college in New Hampshire.

While in graduate school, develop a sound technical background that can be broadly applicable to positions in industry or consulting. Experience with programs such as R and Python, technical writing, and managing projects are skills sought after by many firms. Be sure to build and maintain your network of colleagues, both within and outside of academia, because these connections can be key in obtaining a position. Remember that your job is not a life-long commitment. If you find yourself unhappy in a position, pursue another, it is never too late to make a change and find a more rewarding career path.
