"There's a feeling about being here at Auburn … maybe it's even cliché these days, but it's like family."
Jim Voss grew up in Opelika, Alabama, and received an Army ROTC scholarship from Auburn University. He graduated in 1972 with a degree in aerospace engineering and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He earned a master's degree at the University of Colorado in aerospace engineering in 1974. After an Army career, Voss began 10 years of shuttle space flights with NASA in 1991, including five separate space flights. Since his retirement in 2003, he has been a professor and associate dean of engineering at Auburn, vice president for space exploration systems at the Transformational Space Corporation, vice president of engineering for SpaceDev and director of advanced programs at Sierra Nevada Corporation. Although semi-retired, Voss continues to teach classes on human spaceflight and mentor graduate students at the University of Colorado.
