row1

If a student would like to defer admission to start their gradaute studies in a term later than stated on the initial application, it is not necessary to reapply. Admitted students may submit a request through their home academic department to defer their admission to start the following semester, or up to one year from the inital admission term. Admitted applicants that wish to enroll more than one year from the initial term of admission must submit a new application.

How to Request an Admission Deferment

row2

  • An email request should be made to the department to which the applicant is admitted.
    • The Graduate Program Officer (GPO) contact information for all programs and departments may be found on the Areas of Study page.

  • This email/written request should contain the reason for your deferral along with the term to which you wish to defer, i.e. Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
  • With department approval, an admitted student is eligible to defer admission from one semester up to one year.
  • The department must approve the request first and then forward to the Graduate School for processing.
Special considerations

row3

  • If a student has been offered an assistantship, they must confirm the continued availability of funding for the requested term in advance, as this may impact the decision to request a deferment.
  • International applicants who have been offered an assistantship and are approved for a deferral must submit an updated International Graduate Assistant Award Statement.
  • International applicants may be required to submit updated personal financial documentation with the deferral request.
