Employees who experience adverse effects after receiving vaccine should use their personal leave (sick or vacation). Emergency Covid-19 Administrative Leave (ECAL) is not available for this situation.
The Covid-19 Vaccine Policy allows employees who are eligible to have up to one hour of paid leave for each vaccine dose. Employees will need to coordinate times with their supervisors. Employees who are travelling from other parts of the state to Auburn in order to receive the vaccine will be required to use their personal leave (sick or vacation) minus the one hour of paid leave. Employees traveling to Auburn in order to receive the vaccine are not eligible for work related travel expense reimbursement.
We recommend individuals who are not an Auburn employee or student contact their health care provider or their local health department for vaccination options. The distribution of vaccines across the state through different providers is designed to support the most broad, equitable vaccine access as possible. As vaccine becomes more widely available the university may receive additional dose to be made available to the public.
Auburn was approved to receive vaccine allotments by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) on a mandate of first providing inoculations to its faculty, staff and students before opening any subsequent doses to the community at large. Auburn continues working with the ADPH in further distribution of the vaccine as it is made available, and the university expects to eventually receive enough vaccines for the entire campus. The university is currently in Phase 1C of its distribution plan. Phase 2 will include campus individuals not included in prior phases, and a Phase 3 would involve family members and dependents of employees and then to members of the local community as vaccine becomes available.
Auburn retirees fall under Auburn’s Phase 3 plan of vaccine distribution as vaccine becomes available. Additional information will be provided regarding how to register under Phase 3 as we approach this phase.
To receive the Covid-19 vaccine as part of Auburn’s current Phase 1C distribution plan, a professor emeritus must work on campus, be considered to have a high risk for Covid-19, and be unable to maintain physical distancing while interacting in person with students or other employees. Upon meeting those criteria, the professor emeritus must also receive approval by either a dean, vice president or Auburn’s Human Resources Department. Once Auburn moves to a Phase 2 of vaccine distribution, those with confirmed employment not included in prior phases will become eligible for the vaccine.
Yes. On Jan. 6, Auburn received its first batch of the Moderna vaccine against Covid-19, with 3,500 doses being delivered and the university immediately initiating a phased approach in administering vaccinations amid the ongoing global pandemic. An exact delivery date for future vaccine doses is not yet known, but planning has been underway for weeks at Auburn for acceptance and distribution as the vaccine becomes available. The Vaccination Program Implementation Committee, made up of members of the Covid-19 Task Force and the Covid-19 Resource Center, is identifying the first groups to be vaccinated based on guidance from the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations based on input from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). ACIP is a CDC advisory committee made up of medical and public health experts who develop recommendations on the use of vaccines in the United States. The CDC and ACIP have defined populations for different vaccination phases.
Auburn University has used these recommendations to model our Covid-19 Vaccination Allocation Guidelines and Vaccination Program Phases. The goal is to move through these phases as quickly as possible so that anyone wishing to have a vaccine will be able to receive it.
The goal is to administer the initially limited supply of vaccines to healthcare individuals and campus first responders, followed by those most at risk individuals that must be on campus to perform job duties and are unable to physically distance in the workplace.

As the university progresses through the Vaccination Program Phases we will continue to communicate about vaccine availability to those who are eligible to receive it. Supply is expected to increase substantially in 2021. We will provide detailed information to the campus when the vaccines are ready for wider distribution.
At this time, we expect to receive a limited supply of vaccines. Priority will be given to members of the campus community. As the vaccine becomes more widely available, we anticipate the vaccine being available for family members and the community in general.
No. While there is no federal or state mandate to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, all eligible individuals are strongly encouraged to follow the Alabama Department of Public Health’s recommendations and get vaccinated as soon as they are able. In addition to protecting each recipient against infection, it is essential that a large enough percent of the population receives the vaccine in order to achieve “herd immunity” to prevent continued spread of the virus causing Covid-19. We must each play our part in this process.
Yes. The Alabama Department of Public Health is currently prioritizing healthcare workers, first responders and those over age 75. ADPH has a scheduling hotline (1-855-566-5333); however, if you do not qualify for a vaccine in the State’s current phase you will be placed on a waiting list. You may check with local hospitals, your personal physician, and local pharmacies, keeping in mind that call volumes will be high, vaccines will not be available at all locations, and you may not qualify for the vaccine during initial phases.
Auburn is providing the vaccine at no cost to employees, students and family members. However, vaccination providers in the community may charge an administration fee for giving the shot.
