If you feel passionately about science and care deeply about working with students, our science education program is the perfect fit for you! We focus on hands-on experiences, and you’ll learn to teach by actually teaching! Through self-evaluation, understanding how students learn, and comprehensive curricular development, you’ll graduate ready to teach.
Programs of Study
The Bachelors in Science Education can be completed in several different specialty areas including Chemistry, Physics, and General Science. Students in the bachelors program are prepared to teach students in grades 6-12. We focus on engaging all learners through a well-grounded understanding of the scientific process and using that in inquiry-based learning. Work with outstanding faculty and become part of our community. Contact us for more information.
This program is offered on-campus only.
AUTeach is a program for undergraduate science students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) designed to address the STEM teacher workforce crisis in Alabama in an innovative way. AUTeach provides the opportunity for COSAM students to explore the profession of science teaching through a hands-on approach. If you are a COSAM science student who enrolls in AUTeach, you can graduate with a double major in your science discipline and education, certified to teach secondary science in Alabama public schools. AUTeach’s unique double-major and classroom teaching experience helps set you apart from your peers by increasing your job opportunities upon graduation, when applying to graduate and professional schools, and in your chosen career in any profession.
Any COSAM student can take the AUTeach exploratory classes – Inquiry Approaches to Science teaching 1 and 2 (CTSE 1000 and CTSE 2000). In these 1 credit hour courses, students who are interested in or curious about teaching learn and implement inquiry-based teaching strategies and participate in field experiences in local schools. Students who complete these courses with a B or better will receive a tuition reimbursement fellowship at the in-state level – that means you can try teaching for no cost if you’re an in-state student.
Our innovative master’s degrees in science education expand upon your bachelor’s experiences. You’ll work directly with outstanding faculty to broaden your approach to teaching science in your specialization (biology, chemistry, physics, general sciences) while you earn your master’s.
Our M.S. non-certification program provides an interdisciplinary graduate-level education for community-based or international educators who do not wish to gain teacher certification/licensure in the United States.
Our innovative master’s degrees in science education expand upon your bachelor’s experiences. You’ll work directly with outstanding faculty to broaden your approach to teaching science in your specialization (biology, chemistry, physics, general sciences) while you earn your master’s. As a graduate of our M.Ed. program, you’ll be eligible to apply for Alabama Class A professional educator certification.
If you have a bachelor’s degree in a science field and want to teach, check our Alternative M.Ed. option.
If you have a master’s degree, but aren’t quite ready for a Ph.D., an Ed.S. may be right for you. In our Ed.S. program, focus on your area of specialty (biology, chemistry, physics, or general science), expand upon your master’s work, and earn a Class AA Alabama teaching certification. You’ll complete a field project that addresses a practical problem in science education.
The Ed.S. degree leads to recommendation for Class AA Alabama professional educator certification.
In our Ph.D. program, you can specialize in biology, chemistry, physics, or general science. Understanding society’s diverse technological focus, we will prepare you for success. Through coursework and careful mentorship, you’ll increase your knowledge, interpret and conduct research, and add to the research field in science education. Our graduates are leaders in science education and work as collegiate faculty.
Ph.D. programs are not part of the Auburn University approved Educator Preparation Programs. The state of Alabama does not have certification/license at this level and therefore this degree is not eligible for reciprocity in other states.
