Application Instructions
To apply to the Counselor Education programs, you must use the Graduate School Application portal. Review the tabs below for instructions on how to complete each part of your application.
In the Graduate School application, select the program choice that matches your intended application:
- Counselor Education PhD: Education/ Counselor Ed/ Supervisor/ PhD
- Distance Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Education/ Clinical Mental Health Counseling/ MEd/ Online
- Distance Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling: Education/ Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (Distance) MEd
- Distance School Counseling MEd: Education/ School Counseling/ Masters/ Online
- On Campus Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Education/ Clinical Mental Health Counseling/ Masters
- On Campus Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling: Education/ Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling/ MEd
- On Campus School Counseling MEd: Education/ School Counseling/ Masters
When prompted, submit the names and contact information for 3 professional/academic references. For each reference, you must answer “Yes” to the question, “Will this provider be submitting the letter of recommendation online?” Our programs only accept recommendation letters and reference forms through the online portal.
- Unofficial transcripts: Upload unofficial transcripts from all colleges you have attended (including Auburn University, community colleges, and colleges where you may have only taken one or two courses).
- Official transcripts
- The program can use unofficial transcripts for admissions review and recommendation. However, official transcripts are required before students can enroll and register for classes. In addition, if unofficial transcripts are different from transcripts, the applicant will be disqualified for admission to the program.
- Request official transcripts from all colleges you attended, including Auburn University, community colleges, and colleges where you may have only taken one or two courses.
- Official transcripts should be sent to The Graduate School, 106B Hargis Hall, Auburn, AL 36849.

- Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Help us understand your fit with Auburn University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling master's degree program. In doing so, please elaborate on the experiences you have had (e.g., provision of counseling or helping roles, research, volunteer work, prior education and training, etc) that demonsrate your qualifications and fit with the program. Please also describe how your pursuit of this degree will help you meet your career objectives, and why you want to complete your degree at Auburn University.
- Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling: Help us understand your fit with Auburn University's Rehabilitation Counseling master's degree program. In doing so, please elaborate on the experiences you have had (e.g., provision of counseling or helping roles, research, volunteer work, prior education and training, etc) that demonsrate your qualifications and fit with the program. Please also describe how your pursuit of this degree will help you meet your career objectives, and why you want to complete your degree at Auburn University.
- Counselor Education: Help us understand your fit with Auburn University's Counselor Education Ph.D. program. Please elaborate on the experiences you have had that demonstrate your qualifications and fit with the program, including how your previous education has prepared you to enter a doctoral program, your experiences providing counseling services (including practicum and internship experiences), volunteer work, research, and prior training. Please also describe how pursuing this degree will help you meet your career objectives, and why you want to complete your degree at Auburn University.
- School Counseling: Help us understand your fit with Auburn University's School Counseling master's degree program. Please elaborate on your reasons for choosing to pursue this career and your goals in reference to being a school counselor. Please also describe why you have selected the School Counseling program at Auburn University for your degree. Finally, please describe your preparation for this degree, including academic and professional/volunteer experiences, communication skills, and knowledge and skills related to technology.
Use the following prompt for the Cultural Statement: Describe in detail up to three experiences you have had working with individuals who are culturally different from yourself (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity, age, nationality, ability status, etc). For each experience, describe your role (e.g., counselor, teacher, student, etc), the setting, the ways in which culture was a salient part of the experience, and the specific ways this experience has challenged you to grow in your understanding of diversity, inclusion, and/or social justice.
Upload your resume/CV. This document should contain the following elements in a form/format of your choosing:
- Education;
- Related Professional Experience (volunteer, practicum/internship, and/or employment);
- Research Experience (publications, presentations, and/or other research involvement);
- Professional Certifications and/or Licenses (if any);
- Membership in Professional Organizations;
- Honors, Awards, or Recognitions.
The program does not require applicants to take the GRE to be considered for admission. However, GRE scores may be used to determine some scholarships or fellowships (internal or external to Auburn University). If you choose to submit GRE scores, send scores directly from the GRE testing center to The Graduate School, Auburn University. Use AU Code #1005. Allow 4 to 6 weeks before the application deadline for the receipt of GRE scores.
For International Applicants:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Score must meet Auburn University’s minimum requirement. Provisional or conditional admittance is not provided.
- Paper TOEFL range=310-677, Auburn minimum 550
- Computer TOEFL range=0-300, Auburn minimum 213
- iBT TOEFL range=0-120, Auburn minimum 79
- Auburn will also accept a 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.
For School Counseling applicants only: School Counseling applicants must complete an Alabama fingerprint and background check.

- After you have this procedure done, please copy the results FROM THE WEBSITE LINK ABOVE and upload it to your Graduate School application. Please do not upload the letter you received in the mail – we need the copy from this website.
