Best Practices

Whether using Cascade or another CMS, use the following best practices to create pages that are clear, consistent and aligned with the Auburn brand.

General
  • Information Architecture: Always begin with the purpose and audience in mind. Place the most important content in the top sections and use information modules to highlight important information or CTAs.
  • Navigation Structure: Keep menus simple and intuitive, avoiding excessive dropdowns.
  • Mobile Responsiveness: Ensure the design adapts well to different screen sizes.
  • Ensure Accessibility (WCAG Compliance): See guidelines.
  • Avoid using PDFs when possible.
  • Call-to-Action (CTA) Buttons: Ensure buttons are action-oriented (e.g., “Apply Now” vs. “Click Here”).
Layout
  • White space: Carefully consider the balance of whitespace on each page. In general, don't begin pages with a very visual feature module.
  • Vary photos and text: Do not use all the same modules, same color modules or all large marketing-style modules.
  • Consider audience and purpose: Some landing pages may have more visual elements, while interior informational pages will have more text and lists.
Copy
  • Short Sentences & Paragraphs: Aim for concise, easy-to-digest content. Avoid large blocks of text. Break up long content with subheadings, bullet points, or images.
  • Avoid Jargon & Acronyms: Use plain language unless industry-specific terms are necessary.
  • Active Voice: Prioritize active voice over passive (e.g., "We offer support" vs. "Support is offered by us").
Images
  • Image Optimization: Headers and modules in the Cascade site builder indicate appropriate image sizes. If no size is indicated, we suggest 1280 (w) x 720 (h) for horizontal photos and 600 x 600 for square. Use JPEGs/PNGs for faster load times.
  • Responsiveness: Test images to ensure responsiveness.
  • Use vibrant, action-oriented photography: See brand photography guidelines.
  • Descriptive alt text: Alt text improves accessibility for visually impaired users, enhances SEO and provides context when images fail to load.
  • Icons: Find an branded icon library in the Brand Center. The icon library is pre-loaded in the site builder.
Testing and Maintenance
Content Updates: Establish a process for regular content reviews to ensure accuracy.
