Statement from the Auburn City Police Department:

  • "At approximately 11:48 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2008, Auburn Police received a 911 call for assistance at the Edge Apartments, 1114 S. College Street. Upon arrival, police located Richard K. Straus, 20 years of age, who had been stabbed. The victim was transported to East Alabama Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He has been upgraded from critical to fair condition.  It appears that this incident was a dispute between roomates. The suspect, Johnathon Sepp Etterer, 20 years of age from Birmingham, AL, turned himself in to Auburn Police on April 17th at approximately 1:00 a.m. Etterer has been charged with Assault 2nd degree and has been transported to the Lee County Detention Center."

Neither the suspect nor the injured person is an Auburn University student. Because the incident occured near campus, the university alerted the campus community.
