Services for former Alabama Extension Director Gaines Smith scheduled for Saturday

Gaines Smith, former executive director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, passed away Wednesday, June 10. During his 45-year career, he served Alabama citizens in positions at the county, district and state levels, including three years as interim director and 10 years as director. He retired in 2011.
Smith earned a degree in animal science at Auburn and was an employee and or student at Auburn for his entire professional career, earning additional degrees in agricultural science and public administration. In February, he was named to the Auburn University Agricultural Hall of Honor.
An outdoor celebration of life will be held at his home in Evergreen Hills on Saturday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. at 2228 County Road 40 West, Billingsley, Alabama. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in his memory. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alabama 4-H Club Foundation, 224 Duncan Hall, Auburn University, AL 36849.
