“Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This famous quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will serve as the theme for Auburn University’s 2023 MLK Scholarship Breakfast set for Jan. 16.

The annual event is a collaboration between the National Forum for Black Public Administrators—East Alabama Chapter and Auburn University’s Office of University Outreach and the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, or OID. It also will kick off the university’s 2023 MLK Week, slated for Jan. 16-20, that is designed to bring people together to celebrate King’s legacy.

Auburn will join the rest of the nation in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16 through this premier event, as well as other activities to honor the life and legacy of one of the most influential and accomplished figures in the history of United States. King’s activism and organizational leadership played a key role in the American civil rights movement, and his legacy is a reminder that citizens must continue to work to create a more equitable nation for all Americans.

There are a variety of opportunities for members of the Auburn Family to celebrate and learn about the life of King and his fight for civil rights. These include a Canned Good and Hygiene Product Drive Jan. 9-20, a Living the Legacy Vision Board Creation on Jan. 17, a MLK Lunch & Learn on Jan. 18 and the MLK Scholarship Breakfast on Jan. 16. All breakfast ticket sales will go to support scholarships in the local community.

The Black Student Union, or BSU, will continue its yearly tradition and collaborate on a day of service. The full calendar of scheduled events and how to register is available here.

Auburn and OID recognize the substantial impact King had on America’s civil rights movement and are committed to continuing to accelerate inclusion in the community.
