The Auburn University Office of Special Projects and Initiatives hosted 54 eighth and ninth graders from Montgomery Public Schools for the GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, program on Auburn University's campus from July 10-15.

The program intends to enhance college readiness among students by increasing their exposure to higher education coursework and environments. Students participated in mathematics, science and English courses taught by Auburn University graduate students, as well as enrichment activities hosted by the Auburn University Libraries, College of Agriculture, College of Architecture, Design and Construction, College of Human Sciences, Department of Mechanical Engineering and College of Veterinary Medicine.

GEAR UP is a six-day residential summer program funded by the U.S. Department of Education designed to significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Auburn hosts the program each year through a partnership with Alabama State University, and by 2027, the GEAR UP program will provide academic preparation services to more than 26,000 students within the Montgomery Public School (MPS) system.
