Akwaaba! Welcome to Ghana! From June 6–18, the Office of Outreach Global led a group of 15 participants—seven Auburn students and eight faculty and staff members—to Accra, Ghana, bringing back one of the office’s signature programs.

Outreach Global Service-Learning Pharmacy station. The experience began with a city tour of Accra that included a traditional naming ceremony and visits to historic sites such as the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Independence Square. The group also participated in educational and cultural immersion programs in Cape Coast, where they visited the Cape Coast Slave Castle and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Auburn’s Ghanaian partner.

At the heart of the trip were five impactful service-learning days. Students, faculty and staff worked at Mempeasem Polyclinic and St. Pauline Hospital, providing free medical checkups and medications to local Ghanaians. In addition, College of Education PhD student Hanna Kraker spent time teaching at an elementary school in the Ayawaso Municipal area. Emmet Dunham, a graduate student in the College of Engineering, visited Accra Technical University to learn about its technical engineering programs. Dunham and Michael Prol, an undergraduate engineering student, also spent time at the University of Ghana School of Engineering’s Department of Material Science, where they worked with Eric Nyarkson, an Auburn alumnus and head of the department.

The success of this program was made possible through partnerships with the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly of Accra, Ghana, Harrison College of Pharmacy and Wabash Tours Ghana Ltd. Special thanks to Auburn University Outreach, Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, Office of Faculty Engagement, College of Liberal Arts, the AU Graduate School, Auburn United Methodist Women of Faith and the Alabama Department of Finance – Division of Risk Management for their generous financial and in-kind support.

Outreach Global invites students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to join next year’s Ghana Service-Learning Program, which will be held in summer 2026. Program dates will be announced in the coming months. Student applications will open in fall 2025 on the Auburn Abroad website.

This unforgettable experience marked a meaningful return to Ghana, and Outreach Global is excited to further expand its impact in summer 2026.
