Robotics teams from 12 states gathered at Auburn University’s Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum Feb. 13-14 to compete in the "Hyundai Presents the SCORE Showdown." This prestigious VEX Robotics Competition Signature Event brought together 76 of the nation’s most gifted and dedicated high school robotics teams. After months of preparation, engineering redesigns and collaboration, students showcased their problem-solving and strategic thinking skills on complex playing fields designed to test their engineering abilities.
The competition was hosted by the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education (S.C.O.R.E.) at Auburn University, an initiative dedicated to foster robotics education and promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The event was made possible through the ongoing partnership between S.C.O.R.E. and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) which aims to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields and prepare them for the high-demand, skilled workforce needed by advanced manufacturers like HMMA.
As a VEX Signature Event, the Showdown stands out for its scale, prestige and intense competition. Developed by the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation, Signature Events offer teams the chance to qualify for the VEX World Championship. These events play a crucial role in helping students develop critical skills such as teamwork, perseverance and innovation while gaining firsthand experience in problem-solving under pressure.
Pamela Hickman, AP Computer Science Principles and Robotics Coach at Vestavia Hills High School, said, “VEX Signature events are incredibly valuable for our team's growth. S.C.O.R.E. consistently runs well-organized, high-quality competitions. Their professionalism and commitment make these events well worth the investment, and I’m always confident in the experience they provide.”
John Cooper, Engineering Instructor at Autauga County Technology Center, added, “Competing at the SCORE Showdown for the first time was an incredible experience for my team. Facing off against top-tier teams from across the country — including teams from Hawaii — gave them invaluable insights into the level of play at VEX Worlds.”
The event was open to the public, providing families, educators, and STEM enthusiasts with the opportunity to witness the incredible talent and dedication of these young competitors.
“The S.C.O.R.E. Showdown was a very enjoyable and new experience for competing at a higher level of competition,” said an Auburn High School participant Harrison Conti-Elkins. The matches can be mentally draining, but doing well is much more rewarding. I think it was a very transformative experience.”
The SCORE Showdown also marked a significant moment for HMMA, who witnessed firsthand the impact of their educational investments and partnerships. Through initiatives like this, HMMA helps nurture a diverse, skilled future workforce prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s STEM-focused jobs.
