A lifeline in times of crisis: What is the Employee Hardship Fund? 

Imagine receiving life-changing news that turns your world upside down. You've just heard the worst news of your life, and now you're faced with the terrifying possibility of not being able to pay your rent. This is the harsh reality for some Auburn employees.  

“Facing the threat of homelessness due to rental debt and financial hardship from a cancer diagnosis, I felt an overwhelming sense of doom,” one employee shared. “With no immediate solutions and unable to move in with relatives, I prayed for help.” 

“My daily work and treatment routines were depleting my savings. During a late-night trip to Birmingham, I recalled a course about employee benefits, including the Employee Hardship Fund. I applied for assistance. Weeks later, I received approval, bringing immense relief. The fund, supported by dedicated individuals, helped me keep a roof over my head during one of the darkest times in my life, for which I am eternally grateful.” 

Another employee had similar challenges. 

“I've always been independent and self-sufficient, and for most of my time at Auburn, I didn't know about the Hardship Fund,” the employee said. “However, during COVID-19, my family faced numerous financial challenges, culminating in one of my children being hospitalized for several weeks.” 

“Insurance wasn't enough, and I struggled to meet our financial obligations. A coworker recommended the Hardship Fund, which turned out to be a godsend. It helped cover my child's hospital bills and stabilized our finances. The assistance was invaluable during a very tough time.”

The Employee Hardship Fund provides financial support to eligible employees experiencing temporary financial hardship due to a qualifying life event. It is funded entirely by charitable donations. Today, the fund is at risk; multiple employees are awaiting approval, but due to a lack of funds, no approval can be given.
