Transient Credit
If you take classes at another institution and bring the credit back to Auburn, that is called transient credit. You may take courses at another institution over the summer or any other single term, provided you are not suspended from Auburn. No more than 1/2 of your degree can be from a 2-year institution. 3000+ level classes cannot be transferred from a 2-year institution. No more than 3/4 of your degree and 1/2 of your major classes can be transfer or transient work.
You will receive the credit for approved courses, but the grades you earn will not be averaged into your Auburn GPA and will not affect academic processes such as honors, warning, or suspension. They will be included in your overall GPA and will be seen by professional schools, graduate schools, employers, or anyone else who sees your transcript. If you have GAPped a course required for graduation, that course must be retaken at Auburn and cannot be taken as a transient student. Consider carefully where you plan to take particularly important courses, such as those that are important to professional school admissions tests, sequences you will finish at Auburn, and foundational courses. Ensure you prepare yourself for what’s to come, not just “get it out of the way”.
Steps for receiving transient credit:
- Apply to the other college as a transient This means that you plan to take classes there for the semester, but will return to Auburn afterward. If you apply as a transfer student, that means you would plan to stay at the other college and not return to Auburn.
- Complete the Transient Enrollment Form for Auburn Students at Other Institutions in your AU Access and send it to the other college.
- The transient form should tell you course equivalents, but you can also use the transfer equivalency tables Links to an external site. Scroll down to Transfer Courses by State & Institution or Transfer Courses by Course Name to search for equivalent courses.
- If you do not see an Auburn equivalent for a transient course you are interested in, contact your advisor.
- You may be unable to use the online form for certain classes (ex: EMT courses at Southern Union). Instead, you should use the paper
- Request a copy of your transcript be sent from the other institution to Auburn University's Registrar's Office once your final grades have been posted. Transcripts must be official and must be sent directly from the transfer institution to Auburn University. Auburn does not accept transcripts issued to the student electronically, sent by the student, or faxed copies. Auburn will only accept a hand-delivered copy of the official transcript if it is unopened in a sealed envelope from the transfer institution. We encourage transcripts to be sent electronically to Auburn University through the following services: Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, SCOIR, or Scribbles. Official transcripts can be emailed to transfer@auburn.edu or physically mailed to:
