MINUTES
Spring Business Meeting
AU Chapter, AAUP
May 12, 2000, 3:30 pm
206 Tichenor Hall

Attendance: Because of the issue of trustee reform pending in the State Legislature, many non-members attended the first portion of the meeting, particularly representatives of the Auburn Plainsman.

Agenda Items and Minutes:

  1. By Conner Bailey--Welcome and introduction of Guest Speaker, Mr. Bill Porter, Pres of AU Alumni Assn.
    1. Mr. Porter spoke of the pending legislation concerning trustee reform, but his remarks changed drastically from those he had prepared the day before. According to Mr. Porter, the proposed bill was dead the previous evening, but Senators worked on it, reaching a compromise that resurrected the bill. [NOTE: This bill passed the Legislature the following week] Mr. Porter thought Senator Ted Little had weighed in on the bill and created the compromise, but Conner said that he spoke with Ted about 10pm the previous night, and Ted claimed to know nothing about any action being taken.

Mr. Porter answered questions about the history of the trustee reform issue. He noted that various groups of alumni had worked for three years, sometimes with allies, sometimes without, to get some kind of reform bill through the Legislature. He urged the faculty to support the bill as it stood, even though they and he did not like the compromise. Porter noted that the alumni were exhausted by the continued fight, and were unlikely to make another go of it the following year if this bill failed.

Mr. Porter said the AU Alumni Association looked forward to continuing to working with the faculty on issues that affected the campus and institution.
