Deans' Fit Family Challenge
For the Fall of 2019, Dean Richard Hansen (HSOP), Dean Gregg Newschwander (AU School of Nursing), and Dean Elizabeth Palmarozzi (VCOM) have announced the Deans' Fit Family Challenge, a health and wellness competition. Student leadership from each school was also involved in the fun and competitive challenge
Details
- To sign up for the challenge you will need a two person team; at least one of the team members must be an HSOP faculty, staff, or student.
- The challenge will officially have weigh ins September 16-20, 2019 and weigh outs November 18-22, 2019.
- Your team will be judged on two metrics
- Team cumulative number of minutes of exercise logged (self-reported, and no, I do not want to involve the Honor Board for violations); participant minutes need to be logged by Friday of each week. Any intentional, moderate physical activity is acceptable (e.g., running, weight lifting, Pure Barre, yoga, swimming, biking, etc). Walking from your car to school is not moderate activity.
- Team cumulative number of total pounds lost from baseline to endpoint.
- Weekly prizes are awarded per team; random choice and for cumulative exercise minutes. At the end of the competition, final prizes are awarded to individuals for overall total exercise minutes logged and for total weight loss from baseline.
- Baseline will be defined by weigh-ins conducted on September 16-20. Paige Patterson will coordinate weigh-ins for the Auburn campus and Dr. Kevin Astle for Mobile. Dr. Jessica Starr in Birmingham, Dr. Taylor Steuber in Huntsville, and Dr. Marilyn Bulloch in Tuscaloosa have volunteered to coordinate in their regions. You will officially sign-up at the time of weigh-in. Endpoint will be defined by weigh-ins conducted in the same locations on November 18-22. Look for instructions from our student committee.
- There is no cost to participate and we hope to have some great prizes throughout the completion to be awarded at periodic weekly intervals as well as at the end of the competition.
- The leader board as well as a schedule for various group exercise activities will be announced by email and on the HSOP video boards. The group activities may include things like the Dean’s run, True40 class, and a yoga session.
- There will be a Fitness Cup trophy awarded to the school who wins the overall competition. The winning program will have their name engraved each year, bragging rights and will keep the trophy for the year following receipt. The overall competition (i.e., Fitness Cup) will be a composite score of average weight loss + average hours exercised for all participants in each program. Each program will have a single score. Highest score wins. Weekly prizes are per team and cumulative exercise minutes.
Prizes
- Prizes will be distributed weekly based on minutes of moderate/intense activity logged. This is self-reported and submitted through the forms above. There will be one winning team (2 participants) per college per week.
- There will also be a random drawing from all teams that participate. There will be one winning team (2 participants) per college, per week.
- There will be one overall winner for most minutes logged and one overall winner for most weight loss from baseline. If enough prizes are secured, awards may be presented to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each outcome.
- The winning school will be based on a composite score of average hours logged plus average pounds lost. The school with the highest composite score will win The Deans' Cup for the year.
- Prizes will be distributed to college representatives by HSOP representatives as they come in. Final prizes will be distributed by HSOP representatives.
Villages Competition (HSOP Only)
- There will be a village sub-competition by providing opportunities for villages to earn points based on participation.
- There will be three group fitness classes for the Auburn campus (Dean's Run; True40 class; yoga session) and challenge participants will be able to sign in at the events. Mobile is currently basing its sub-competition on minutes logged but we look forward to expanding the villages competition in future years.
- The Health and Wellness Committee will have members with iPads at the events to take roll via a Google Form. Each participant who is a student/mentor will record their village number on the form.
- One participant = one point for the village.
- At the conclusion of the competition, the village with the most points will receive a pizza party to occur at the beginning of the spring semester.
